Centro Familiar

The Centro Familiar State Preschool offers a bilingual half-day preschool enrichment program for three and four-year olds whose families are low income. Patterned after the well known Head Start Program, the successfully federally funded program, the State Preschool began in 1985. The State Preschool operates two classrooms of 25 children during the months of September through June. The classrooms are located at the First United Methodist Church in Santa Barbara. It is staffed by a team of professional educators who personalize the needs and interest of each child. Each child has hands-on age-appropriate experiences that stimulate their imagination and promote their learning styles.

The program emphasis is to make sure that children feel good about themselves, to develop their self esteem and self confidence. We look at the social development as a number one importance. Children have to feel good about themselves to be ready to learn.

Our Center:

  • Forms partnerships with families who are encouraged to observe their children at play, join in classroom activities, consult with our staff and utilize our program resources
  • Provides bilingual support for Spanish speakers when needed.

To apply, parents must submit

    • Program application
    • Proof of income
    • Copy of child’s birth certificate
    • Current physical examination
